Make or Break is an ongoing collaboration between Sydney artists Connie Anthes and Rebecca Gallo that began in 2015. So far this project has taken the form of using galleries as live work spaces; performing personal admin for an audience; co-writing texts; circulating fictional currencies; making books; and facilitating conversations as an alternative to traditional forms of research.
In 2016 Make or Break self-published an artist book. It was produced following the first iteration of the Make or Break live studio project, which took place in December 2015 at Firstdraft Gallery in Sydney. The book’s non-hierarchical proliferation and repetition of images of space, materials and assemblages echoes the format of the exhibition itself, where all aspects of the studio process were made public and given equal weight. It features essays by David Eastwood and Bek Conroy, and writing by Connie Anthes and Rebecca Gallo, with photographic contributions by Zan Wimberley and Document Photography. It comes vacuum-sealed in plastic, along with a sprinkling of studio rubble.
